Both can naturally tarnish when exposed to air and moisture, but sterling silver tarnishes faster due to its alloy. Pure silver has a slower tarnish rate.
Tarnish is easily removed with a polishing cloth or gentle cleaning.
Use a soft polishing cloth for light tarnish. For deeper cleaning:
- Mix warm water with mild soap
- Soak briefly
- Rinse and dry thoroughly
Avoid bleach, chlorine, and harsh chemicals.
It’s not recommended. Water won’t ruin sterling silver, but frequent exposure to moisture and soap can increase tarnish and dullness over time.
Tarnish occurs when silver reacts with sulfur in the air. Storing jewelry properly and cleaning it regularly helps keep it bright and shiny.
Store jewelry in an airtight pouch or zip bag to slow down tarnish. Keep pieces separate to prevent scratches.
